Rose of the Week...Rock N Roll

I'm a scheduling these posts ahead of time.  It is winter so no roses are currently blooming.  I have to use past pictures.  That being said, the rose of the week is Rock & Roll.  I, initially, thought it would be similar to the Memphis Music but the colors are very different.  It is a striped rose.  It is very pretty but as you can see in the picture, I have to watch out for blackspot.

I bought this rose as a bare root from Edmund's I believe.    I think it looks similar to the Scentimental Rose.  

Rock & Roll is a grandiflora rose.   It's bloom size is 4"-6".  It reads disease resistant but perhaps for me, it needs more attention.   It grows 4 to 5 feet.

Rose of the Week....Moonstone

I am going to start to doing the rose of the week again..but I won't make promises.  Given that it's the dead of winter, I will have to use past pictures.  The picture below is from roses that I did not grow.  I ordered two bareroot roses last spring and gave one to a lady named Tracy.  I got the other one.  Her's have done fabulous and the picture below proves it.  Mine did so so....I need to take care for them more.

Perhaps one day I will.  Moonstone is a hybrid tea rose.  They grow four to six feet high and two to three feet wide.  They are repeat bloomers.  They have a slight fragrance but I have a very poor sense of smell.  They have blooms that average close to 5 inches.  I first saw the rose at Bellingrath Gardens and it supposedly does well down here.  It is not a pure white.  As you can see it has a touch of pink on the edges but an elegant rose all the way around.  For more information, click HERE.

Rose of the Week (and Last Week) Ketchup & Mustard and John F Kennedy Rose

 The roses of the week (& last week) are Ketchup & Mustard and JFK rose.  I'll start with Ketchup & Mustard.  I bought her (I believe from Edmund's) as a bare root and she was planted in late winter.  The unique thing about this rose (and as the name implies) is that she is yellow on the back of the petals and red on the front.
This picture was taken this morning.  But I, also, have previous pictures.  It evidently is a new rose because I can not find much information & my research shows it was introduced last year (2012)

I will rely on Edmund's information.  According to what I read, she will grow 4' x 4'.  This rose is a floribunda.  It's blooms are approximately 3" -4" in size.

It carries no fragrance.  My particular plant will bloom in flushes.  She is not a continuous bloomer...but I am also taking into account that she is young...not to just me but to everyone...so I am inclined to think that she will bloom more profusely in the future.

She is truly a unique rose.

 I love weird or unusual roses....  She is not disease resistance but I am inclined to think she likes the cooler weather.

JFK I have a lot of  difficulty with.  If you ask this novice, I would say buy him potted vs bare root.  My 2 bare roots of JFK died, so I replaced him with one that I bought at the co-op..that is faring very well.  Even at the co-op I saw one in the trash that did not make it...and if Ms. Dina can't make it grow...no one can.  However, this one that was bought, is a magnificent rose.  I guess I am saying that if you buy it bare root...keep a very close eye on it.  I do think they are worth the trouble.

 I am probably painting a horrible picture for such a beautiful rose.  But I do need to say that the canes could be used as weapons..the thorns are very profound...so my point is (at least, initially) it is not a low maintenance rose.  BUT it makes a magnificent white rose. This one is approximately 5" wide. It is pure white.

 JFK is a hybrid tea rose.  It is no surprise that it's year of introduction was 1964 after John F. Kennedy.   According the web (thus far) it will grow 4' high x 3 ' wide.  It's 3' now so I am inclined to think it will get higher.  I have roses that are not climbers that are over 6' because of the water (is my guess).

The roses are currently dropping on the stem but I read that it may be because it's an unestablished rose. It also reads moderately thorny..I'm inclined to disagree on the latter part.  

I will say that it has bloomed fairly continuous....& if you can handle the initial maintenance and love big, beautiful, white roses...JFK might be for you but if you are new to roses...wait a bit.  For more information, click HERE.

Rose of the Week...Lady diana

I have been out of town for a few days, so I am still getting life back to normal.  I did not want to forget about the rose of the week.  Not sure what I will do over the winter but one thing that I was astonished by was all the knockouts I saw along my trip.  They were used in roadside medians!  I could not believe my eyes!  Anyway, the rose of the week...is  Lady Diana.

The rose is a hybrid tea.  I am not sure why it has speckles on it, but other pics I see on the web has the same specks.  According to the web, it grows to five feet...it's already past that.  I am 5'3" & it's much taller than I am.  It does well in the heat, according to what I read it likes zones 7b and warmer.  

  

It's roses are approximately 5" roses & blooms in flushes... it's pale pink & has roughly 40 petals.  If you live in heat & humidity where the devil would sigh, I think this rose works very well.

When it blooms, it blooms all over....great for our heat....

Rose of the Week...First Prize

The rose of the week is called First Prize.  This is a new rose in my garden & I bought it potted from the Elberta Co-op.  This an beautiful rose.  Now, I do get a bit tired of pink roses, sometimes, but a pretty rose is a pretty rose.  That being said, First Prize is outstanding and worthy of it's name.  

First Prize is a hybrid tea rose.  Its blooms can be as large as 6 inches!  It is an AARS rose winner in 1970.    When it blooms it blooms in mass.  It is moderately fragrant.    As mentioned, mine is a baby but they can get large (according to the web).  It states they can get 5 to 10 feet high and 5 feet wide.  

It prefers warmer climates.  What I read, it likes zone 6b or higher.   I keep reading that it's thorny...I have roses that are much worse.  For example...JFK rose' canes can be used as weapons.

Needless to say, it makes a great cut flower.  

It does have issues with black spot...but overall great rose...

Rose of the Week...Granada

I love multi-colored roses and Granada is a great example.  One thing I will say is that she opens slowly and stays on the stem a long time.  She has deep pink on the edges and gradually evolves to orange.

I grew Granada from bare root this winter.  She is a hybrid tea.  So she has the traditional tea shaped and a double bloom.

She is fragrant.   The web says that she, also, goes by the name Donatella.  Her blooms are approximately 4 to 5 inches.  This like other roses in my garden are brand new....but according to the web...it will grow like most teas 4 to 5 feet.

According to the web, it is considered a shade tolerant rose, but I have her placed in full sun.

 This rose like all the roses in the back garden are on an irrigation system...I feel the reason why most of my roses bloom so young is because I make sure they have tons (and I mean tons) of water.

Rose of the Week....Fragrant Cloud

I usually pick a rose that I have had a while...but Fragrant Cloud is my newest rose.  I, also, like to show when I have a full flush.  Fragrant Cloud lives up to it's name.  I do not have the greatest sense of smell..but it's fragrance is unmistakable.  

I got this one as a potted plant from the co-op.  I have a lot of good luck with those roses...

They call the color coral red...but I would call it peachish orange...maybe that is coral red.  It does make huge blooms.  The roses average about 5 inches and the elegant shape that I love so much.   

It's hardy from zones 7 to 10...  Like 90% of my roses..they are all babies...so it will be interesting to see when it is mature.

It's a hybrid tea...and according to what I read...it will get five feet tall..and wide....the rose garden is going to be packed when these roses grow up....

Rose of the Week... Moondance

The rose of the week is Moondance.  This was purchased potted...and has bloomed heavily all year.  It is a great cutting rose.

It was a 2007 award winner by AARS.   I haven't had many issues with it but the roses I bought potted have fared better than bare root, overall.  

It grows up to 6 feet.  Hardy up to zone 5.  Has a mild fragrance.  I think it has worked well in our steamy climate.

Rose of the Week...Tiffany Rose

The rose of the week is the Tiffany rose.  I planted two of them as bare roots this past winter.  One is a great deal smaller than the other despite similar conditions.   It's an award winning rose by the AARS (my understanding).  

The other rose I have is not very tall...but this one has grown to about 4 1/2 feet.

It's blooming rather profusely.  I did give it a full does of Bayer Rose care.

The blooms are very large and elegant.  You can see it's size in comparison to my hand.

Right now it's blooming profusely which is why I chose it.

It is a hybrid tea rose.  The web reads that it grows up to 4 feet but my experience has been given enough water...roses can grow taller.

Web reads that is hardy from zones 4 to 9.  It does have a fragrance.  

I have read that it can get bushy, but this one seems to be upright.  It has bloomed fairly often.
