Dollar General Bare Root Roses...Honey, let me explain what happened......

First of all, it was tax day and I'm a CPA...so rationality is not in the picture.  But, I ordered a new rose book online and it was a week past when I expected it.  Also, it rained heavily and my husband remarked that the new thrift store end table on the back porch did not need to get wet like that.  So, after work I went to the post office looking for my book.  It wasn't there...pouting I walked out of the post office.  Dollar General is right next door.  So I went to buy the table cloth, doggie treats, a new candle, potato chips...you know, the essentials.....  While checking out, I asked the clerk what happened to the box of bare roots that were outside a few days ago...(they were looking so sad).    Initially, she said ..."We threw them away"  I said really???   She thought I meant the cut roses...when I explained what I meant she said it was around the corner aisle.  I said most of them are probably dead....the canes were brown.  They had been in a box ...literally...for months...how could they not be.  Well, I think she asked the manager and said we might sell them for half off.  My eyebrow peaked.  So I rummaged through the boxes.  Sadly, the roses that I did not have but wanted looked dead.  I rummaged through any that looked like they had a ounce of life to them.  I took them home.  My husband was on the couch...and I said, honey, let me explained what happened..

Giving me a look like...did you wreck the car I explained about the roses that they were practically giving them away and begging for me to have them...in any event here they are
Two tropicanas, three don juans, three joseph coat's ,one charism, and one pascali

You may look down upon them but consider the fact they have lived in a box for months and have lived...there is something to be said for that

Most were in horrible shape but if they had any sign of life I took them

Soaked them over night in epsom salt

You see the date and I'm a CPA, so instead of scrambling I opted to put them in pots for the moment

I bought a few dollar generals roses a couple of months back that are doing okay.

Even the ones I thought would not live ...did

This is Ebb Tide I got from Edmunds...one of the healthiest bare roots I received, but it does seem to want to sprout...most canes are still green but it's like it's still asleep

WHATS THIS!!!  Heresey  I say....this climbing WHITE iceberg does NOT look white...either  a bait and switch or planted the wrong bare root.

Good luck with them. Most of the roses I've seen at Dollar Stores have looked so pitiful, I wasn't even tempted. I hope yours fare well. Soon you won't have room for more roses! ;)

Sometimes roses like that last Iceberg, the graft dies and the rootstock puts up, "Oh, NO! Phooey, it's Dr. Huey!"

That was the story of my climbing Queen Elizabeth. I'm still letting Dr. Huey lean against the grape arbor post.

I must be gaining experience...for once, I understand what you mean. Will look up and see if it is Dr. Huey

My sloping garden looks like yours, except that it is located in Maryland. I could not resist rescuing 10 pitiful bare root roses at a discount store ($3.50-4.99). I should know better... my past experience was that the roses were mislabeled, which explains the price. I planted them in pots. All 10 of them are growing beautifully above the graft line. This time I'd like to see what their blooms look like before planting them in the garden. Good luck!

Actually the DG bare roots are doing fine but I do have a lot of misplaced roses....I bought them at Lowe's...the jury is still out but the roses I thought I planted and what has come up are different...jury is still out because I could have easily mixed them up since I probably have planted well over 80 of them.

I must say I have done the same thing as you. Just today I bought quite a few of these exact roses from dollar general and googled to see if anyone ha any success with them. Please do keep us posted. Mine look much poorer quality than even the ones you chose. Wish me luck.

I purchased my roses in March and planted them in the ground two days later. I was pleasantly surprised when lovely lilies bloomed!

I have found that the dollar general roses are great if you like surprises! I had several turn out totally different than the picture on the bag. They are pretty now, and going on four years old. I would love to see how the original poster's roses are doing from DG and want to see pictures!
