Feeding Schedule 2013

**** Note and Recommendation.  You, probably, do not have to feed your roses as much as I do.  I am a beginner so I am probably overfeeding.  That being said, I do have the best results with Bayer Advanced All in One Rose and Flower Care.  So if you want to be more simple or less labor intensive use it.

Tip...Water your plants the day before feeding or at least make sure the roots aren't dry before feeding liquid fertilizer.

This pages is more for a diary and plans for feeding my roses.  I discovered that my roses responded very well to food, although in 2012 they were very bloomy but not a ton of foliage.  Here is what I have done and will do..the bullet points in each month stand for a week.

  • January
    • Nothing
    • Mushroom Compost
    • Epsom salt (1 tsp per bush)..front drive roses received a sprinkle of blood meal
    • Nothing
  • February
    • Nothing
    • Feb 22.  Heavy spring rains.  Front field roses (sprinkle of osmocote, coffee grinds, and bayer 2 in 1 in drip zone, scrubbed in) Did all established roses except for rose tree and 4 of the knockouts because of rain.  Gave established a heavier pruning as I read that if you want a cane to rebloom need to prune to five leaves).  Also, got rid of a lot of the black spot leaves....didn't need to get the year off on the wrong foot.

    • Fish emulsion 5-1-1
  • March
    • Bayer all in one 9-14-9 march 17th one ounce on established roses and 1/2 on bareroots...pruned the bad stems
    • Blank
    • Blank
    • Fish oil emulsion...smells exactly as it sounds
  • April
    • Blank
    • Milorgranite
    • Miracle Gro...front field roses and back garden roses....around the porch roses. Miracle Gro on remaining roses
    • Osmocote..just a sprinkle.  I like to use granulars when it rains...I feel it makes contact better.  I used Osmocote on all plants. I, only, feed roses to this extent but I do feed other plants a couple of times of year and I do like Osmocote because it's a slow release pellet.
  • May
    • I feed granular on rainy days and liquid on dry days.  It is supposed to rain all week.  Feed Bayer 2-1 granular to front roses (5/1/13) including museum.  Seeing signs of aphids and black spot and rust are an issue on some roses....on 5/2//finished the rest of the roses with the exception of the green ice..directions read do not sue granular the first ear on them.
    • Bayer liquid Advanced All in one rose care...museum roses received miracle gro
    • Miracle Gro 10-10-10 on my roses..Museum roses got epsom salt.  Need to find a faster way to feed.
    • Fish oil, museum as well.  Analyzer showed not strong on the nutrients.  Could be analyzer.  Roses seemed to respond very well to the fish oil.
  • June
    •  6/4 fed bayer all in one to green ice, struggling roses, backporch and side of the house roses, front yard roses, but not creekside.  Will continuewith bayer on the rest of the roses.  Used full strength of bayer on distressed..this seemed to burn them a bit.  Note smaller plants....less dose.  6/8 Bayer on all roses on west side of rose garden.  Suspect RRD on Altissimo sprayed with Sevin.  Bug problem.  Since laying the screen and removing the weeds...roses become more of a target.  Will finish roses with bayer in the next few days.
    • Between heat and lack of time, I have stopped feeding for a couple of weeks.
    • Blank
    • Miracle gro on roses, left over rose care and fish oil left in sprayer on museum and perinneals
  • July
    • Blank
    • Blank
    • Front field roses, got 1 ounce dose of Bayer.  Back flowers got a hodgepodge of stuff.  Osmocote, bayer and miracle gro combined in the sprayer. ..not the osmocote....I only "shoot" them with fertilizer because I would rather have done too little than too much.  I will start picking up feeding as we approach the end of summer and as water is more available.  Once irrigation systems are in place, they will be fed regularly.
