February Bloom Day

Well, it's bloom day once again.  If you are not familiar with bloom day, it's where garden blogger's from all around the world, take pictures of what's blooming in their garden and post it on May Dreams Gardens.  The picture above I thought was bad but I found it to be a touch artistic.  A few daffodils are blooming.
I have countless camellias and azaleas, the azaleas haven't started blooming only budding.

These pale pink camellias turn peach as they age.

The back rose garden is still dormant.  I have thrown in the towel and called a landscape company to weed, edge and mulch it.  It's 3000 sq feet but I think a jumpstart will remotivate me and not feel so overwhelming.

Weeds have taken over a lot of the grassy area

I believe these are called huckleberries but I could be wrong.

Behind the rose gardens is where I planted the early spring bloomers in a few weeks it will be all aglow with camellias marking the beginning of spring for me.

Love how to it turns peach as it fades.

The greenhouse has been recently rebuilt.  I love not having visqueen but will admit that it insulated more I feel.  Some of the plants seem a bit touch with frost.

Winged begonia

My regular begonias have clover in them.

Sedum? I believe is about to bloom, first time I will see that with these.

My one blooming daffodil.  My MIL has an issue with her daffodils not blooming.  I often wonder if they are just hungry.

Some tulip trees are just budding.

My crocus' are starting pop up their leaves.

More huckleberry

The lily field is over come with weeds.  I think this week I will start mowing. My husband is gonna to look at my mower and make sure it is ready for the new season today.

Ah the peacock...I have considered having the landscape company maintenance the tail but they were not available for the rose garden until the first week of March so I may have to handle it myself and decide what to grow this year.
What I did last year.

Tulip trees I bought from Walmart on clearance a couple of years ago, I planted in the front field.  They are a deep purple and have the habit of blooming about three or four times a year.

Fuzzy picture but beautiful flower and smells wonderful.

I know you are looking at a patch of ground but there are literally hundreds of tulip and daffodil bulbs here.  I see a few daffodils popping up.  I have learned not to bury bulbs too deep.

Some are sprouting.

The peacock topiary has remnants of morning glory.  I planted confederate jasmine on them too...I have no experience with jasmine but I thought it was a perennial.  I wonder if they are dead.
Can't see it but this is a creek.  February is historically a wet month.  I hope that we won't be droughty like last year.  We had a severe flood last May.  I'm hoping things will be more even this year.

Creekside.

Philodendron are in pots next to Savannah bird girl.  The pots are nothing but roots but they come back each year..I suspect they have rooted through the bottom of the pots.

Well, I hope to do a better job this year.  There are no new project just maintenance.  I do hope to do more spring cleanup.

The Gardens of October... Can You Name Private Gardens?

Can you name a private garden?  Seems somewhat haughty....I think I am just giving it a theme.  Some people have ranch's that they name....so why not a garden? One day I want to name mine to be called "The Gardens of October.  I mentioned that in a previous post.  Someone said you could, absolutely....

Why, the Gardens of October?  Because I love October to be honest.  My gardens were never prettier.
Here are some pictures of last year.

I have good elements for it.
  • A creek

  • A cemetery next door

  • Spanish Moss

  • A swamp (I don't have a picture)
  • Bats (it's hard to take pictures of bats)...I call them all Milo though.  I always seem them at dusk. Would like bat houses.
  • A love for "spooky" things.  I lived in Louisiana for at least a quarter of my childhood.
  • Oh and did I mention I love October.
So if that is what I will call them one day, then I will gear toward blooms for that month.  Although, wouldn't it be neat to have beds for each specific month? Next year, I am doing the huge peacock topiary but the area is approx 2 to 3 acres, with three spigots and of course the creek runs the whole property.  That is something to consider.

Garden Ornaments...Are You Cute or Sexy?

I treat garden ornaments like I do jewelry.  It should compliment without being overwhelming.  Let me preface that, the following is just my preferences, tastes....simply my opinion.  I think gardens ( like interior decor) are the reflection of its owner.   I, typically, categorize ornaments into two categories....cute or sexy.  There are varieties of both..like classic or fun.  For the most part, I prefer "sexy" over cute.  This is me having a bit of fun, for the record..

Some garden ornaments were given to me like this one.  It had wings but they broke off.  For the record, I typically do NOT like anything wings..but there are exceptions.

A few months back my sister-in-law came to visit, unexpectedly.   Her husband is an architect (I believe she works there as well) and they, also, do interior design.  I really like their style.  They have a blog to show what I mean..Click HERE.  So I respect her opinion.  She mentioned to my husband that the property was "whimsical".    Not the tone I was going for, but after thinking about it..I see why she said it.

There are hanging solar lanterns along a driveway that is almost a quarter of a mile long.  Most people only see them when driving by so it has been how I define the place.  You can't see the house.  This particular one gives an errie blue at night.  But I think it has stopped glowing.  Sexy?
This ornament was also given to me.  It's by the creek and relatively hidden.  I define it as cute.

More solar lanterns.  Sexy?

Lanterns along the drive.  I want to redo the lanterns in all white as I had last year but these were left over from the holidays...I am definitely bordering into cute zone when I wanted sexy.  Cute...

The arches in the front solidified my concept that my sister in law was right about whimsical.  These arches will not remain arches.  I am trying to make a living "wall" with walkways.  Sexy?

Basket someone gave me....yep, I think I am definitely in the cute zone...at least at the front of the property.

Creekside has a simple bench at the bend creek.  Sexy

Sighs, another cute ornament.  I like wind chimes so I try to bury them.

Some of my ornaments were too cool to not look at...like this one in the library.  Sexy

This garden gnome is in a bathroom.  I don't like gnomes.  Sugary cute
Before you get to the house, you see Savannah Bird Girl...she is sexy

Below here is a fountain/pond.  Sexy

Them as a whole.

This one was given to me.  I use to have wings but they broke off.  I am starting to wonder if I am purposefully doing it.  Cute

I am trying to go more "sexy"  This was a spitting seahorse that was there last year.

I replaced him with Aurora...Goddess of the Dawn.  Definitely sexy

Vases..sexy

Auburn birdhouse, cute

Outdoor abstract art and fountain..sexy..

Sexy?

Subdued dragonfly (yes, it has wings I haven't broken off) I like the wings..I bought it.  Cute?

Windchimes ...Sexy?
Almost forgot, sundial.....sexy
